Frequently Asked Questions

1) Q: What are the advantages R.L. Stevens offers to those currently active in the market?
A: Several, but the principal advantages are three: a search exclusively targeting positions focused on where you want your career to go, greater exposure to the highest quality opportunities available or creatable, and a full-time partner that navigates the many nuances of this difficult market successfully every day.

2) Q: I notice you don't have an office in my immediate vicinity. Can you still help me?
A: Yes, absolutely. Several years ago we pioneered the concept of long-distance career management. By using the latest telecommunications technology to its fullest advantage we serve the career needs of clients locally, regionally, nationally and around the globe. The majority of companies today conduct interviews by phone, video teleconference, and even email. As a result of using these methods with us during their search, our clients not only enjoy searches conducted from the comfort of their own homes and scheduled around their busy lives, they receive the added benefit of being more comfortable and competitive in the instances those methods are used for interviewing.

3) Q: How does R.L. Stevens differ from placement firms?
A: Placement firms (recruiters, search firms and agencies) are not equipped to help you advance within your career, change industries, functional title or identify new career paths. You are stereotyped into what you have been doing- not what you could or should do for your career. When you are unemployed, your chances of success with such placement firms are diminished.

Especially in this economy, except in the case of critical hirings, placement assignments are slow because hiring firms are reluctant to pay agency fees. In many cases, the fee is a real detriment to using a placement firm. Many companies offer less money to new employees to offset these fees. Naturally, companies will exhaust all other no-cost options first, before paying employment agency fees.

In comparison, at R.L. Stevens, we pinpoint where you are most marketable and why, and then develop the marketing, leads, openings and research in your chosen target markets. With this method, our clients manage their careers to where they want to be. As your agent, your long term career satisfaction becomes our mission. Once your marketing is developed perfectly for where you're headed, placement firms are leveraged in our searches as they represent a small percentage of the opportunities in the current economy.

4) Q: What type of people do you work with?
A: The short answer is that we work only with professionals who both a) want to execute their career move more successfully, and b) are determined by our evaluation to have marketable functional skills.

5) Q: Are you selective?
A: We are. Like every employer in the marketplace, we are only looking for the best candidates to work with. Not everyone is at an appropriate career juncture to capitalize on the benefits we offer.  There is a right position for everyone in the professional marketplace, but if we deem your goals to be unrealistic or unattainable, we will opt to not participate in a venture in which we can not be successful.

One of the keys to our success is the premium we place on working with those wanting to optimize their career. If we can not help you, we will tell you at the conclusion of our evaluation. Where a different form of assistance is more appropriate, we will point you in that direction.
